Snow-covered mountains surrounding the upper Kedarnath trail
Plan your trip

The mountain rewardsthe prepared.

A Kedarnath yatra is not complicated, but it is high, weather-led and seasonal. A little planning — the right weeks, the right route, the right bag — turns a hard day into a great one.

The shape of a Kedarnath trip

01 · Reach the hills

Most journeys begin at Rishikesh or Haridwar, then follow the river roads up through Devprayag and Rudraprayag to Guptkashi and Sonprayag. It is a full day of mountain driving, so start early and expect the pace of the hills, not the highway.

02 · Sleep low

Spend the night in Guptkashi or Sonprayag rather than rushing the ascent. Your body gets a head start on the altitude, and you reach the Gaurikund trailhead fresh in the morning, when the weather is usually at its kindest.

03 · Walk up

From Gaurikund, the roughly 16 km trail climbs to the temple at 3,583 metres. Most walkers take six to eight hours with breaks; pony, palki and pitthu support runs the whole way. Many split the climb across two unhurried days.

Best Time

Kedarnath yatra essentials

  • The temple traditionally opens in spring (around April–May) and closes after Diwali (around October–November).
  • May to June brings long days, open trails and peak pilgrim energy.
  • September to October offers crisp air, sharp mountain views and thinner crowds.
  • Monsoon months mean lush slopes but real risks of rain, slippery paths and road closures — keep plans flexible.
